Patty on ABA – I started out volunteering at a Special Education Center for children with moderate to severe deficits while in middle school and high school. The ability to help children learn how to independently use eating utensils, communicate through basic sign language, and interact with other peers was exciting to me. As an adult, I became more passionate about helping children learn and grow to meet their potential. While working in ABA as a behaviorist, I gained ample experience with implementing behavior change procedures and fell further in love with the field of ABA.
There is nothing like teaching a child how to mand (make requests), watching the amount of requests they make flourish and seeing the reduction in maladaptive behaviors associated with the inability to effectively communicate their needs. I also enjoy conducting ABA sessions in the community so that we can support children and parents in setting where they have access to the children’s peers.
When not working, I enjoy coloring in adult coloring books, going to the beach with my family and seeing plays and musicals.
